Our Philosophy

Pale Shimmer opened in 2018 on a quiet stretch of Chiltern Street in Marylebone, founded by Emi Whitcombe after a decade spent between Kyoto and London studying Japanese skincare. We began as a single shelf in a tea room and grew, slowly, into the small apothecary we are today — bringing the most considered formulas in Japan to British skin.

We believe in fewer, better things. Every formula in the Pale Shimmer collection is the result of two to four years of testing with our growers in Japan, our chief chemist in Tokyo, and a small panel of clients here in the UK. We do not launch quickly, and we never reformulate for cost.

Our ingredients are single-origin where it matters: Uji matcha, Kagoshima rice ferment, Goto island camellia, Yoshino sake lees. The bottles are frosted glass made in Toyama, the labels are washi paper, and every order is wrapped by hand in Marylebone and sent first-class via Royal Mail.

If a formula is ever not right for your skin, return it to us within sixty days — used or unused — and we will refund or exchange it without question. Skincare is a quiet conversation with your own skin, and we want to be a useful part of it.
